Benefits of Growing Hybrid Peas
Hybrid seeds are bred for consistency, which is why many commercial growers prefer them for market-oriented vegetable farming. With hybrid peas seeds, you can look for:
- Uniform crop stand that is easier to manage and harvest.
- Better pod consistency, which helps when selling in the mandi.
- Reliable performance season after season when sourced from a trusted supplier.
Peas are also a cool-season crop with a limited sowing window, so starting with good seed matters even more. A weak seed lot can leave gaps in the field that you cannot fix later in the season.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the best time to sow hybrid peas seeds in India?
In the plains, Rabi season sowing usually runs from October to mid-November, and sowing in the first week of November is preferred for higher yield. Research from the eastern Himalayan region found that sowing beyond the last week of November reduced pod yield by 1 to 2 tonnes per hectare. In hill areas, sowing dates shift to March to May, so always follow your local schedule.
2. How much seed do I need per acre, and what spacing should I follow?
Seed rate depends on the variety and spacing. Punjab Agricultural University recommends about 45 kg per acre for early maturing varieties and 30 kg per acre for main season varieties, sown in lines at 30 cm × 7.5 cm and 30 cm × 10 cm respectively. Another package of practices suggests 30-45 cm between rows and 10-15 cm between plants.
3. How many days do hybrid peas take to harvest?
It depends on whether the variety is early, mid-season or late. Early types are ready for green pod harvest by about 65 days after sowing, mid-season types by 85-90 days, and late main-season types by about 110 days. Pick pods while they are well filled and tender, and plan for multiple pickings.
4. What soil and temperature do peas need for good germination?
Peas prefer well-drained loamy soil. The favourable soil pH is 6.0 to 7.5, and the optimum temperature for germination is 18-22°C. Temperatures above 27°C shorten the growing period and harm pollination, which is why peas are a cool-season crop. Treating seed with Rhizobium culture also helps, and inoculation is especially useful on fields where peas have not been grown before.
5. Can I save seeds from a hybrid peas crop and sow them again?
It is not recommended. Seed saved from a hybrid crop does not reliably carry the same traits into the next generation, so plant growth, pod quality and uniformity can vary. For consistent results, buy fresh hybrid peas seeds every season from a trusted supplier.
